The Grisport factory is now the greenest in Europe with a massive €8 million investment (approx $18 million NZD) in sustainable energy.
Using the factories substantial roof and walls (an area of 30,000 square metres), 10,600 solar panels will be erected capable of producing 1.4 Megawatts of electricity - more than the factory itself uses. To give a comparison, this amount of power would service 540 family homes of 4 people.
To produce 1.4 megawatts of energy using traditional coal/petrol/oil resources the damage to the environment would be 48 tonnes of toxic waste in 20 years. Solar power produces clean energy. By switching to solar power, Grisport will reduce 1,000 tonnes of Co2 entering the atmosphere each year. This is the equivalent to the yearly emissions produced by 320 cars. Work on this project was completed in 2008.
